Report on Phototrek To Bhagwan Mahavir WLS

The Phototrek to Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, organised by MITRA on 27th September was attended by very few members of the club due to various reasons. However, it was an absolute treat for those who managed to make it on the day.

The day kicked off at around 9:00 AM with a bus ride to the sanctuary, followed by a trek till around 1:30 PM. A short lunch break later, members trekked to the Mahadwar (main gate) of the sanctuary. The pit stop for lunch (or is that a "paet" stop?) was very informative, as details regarding other nature related activities were also given to the members. It was nearly 4:00 PM by the time the trek ended. Members trekked on almost every terrain imaginable, ranging from grasslands, to up-hill, to crossing streams with knee-deep water!

The opportunities for photography were abundant, especially since the MITRA team made it a point to pace the trek as per the requirements of the members. Members managed to get some nice macros of various butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies (which is pretty difficult since they are very active creatures). Besides, small amphibians like frogs and toads also had their 15 minutes of fame as members enthusiastically clicked their photographs. Pictures of the many streams were also clicked in hopes of getting the perfect picture for this months photography competition!! The pit stop for lunch (or is that a "paet" stop?) was very informative, and details regarding other nature related activities were also given to the members.

Overall, the members had a great time out in the sun! Lets hope we get to do this more often!

Phototrek To Bhagwan Mahaveer WLS!!

The Photography Club of GEC, in association with MITRA, have arranged a day long phototrek to Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary on Sunday, 27th September 2009 .

Photographically speaking, the sanctuary is one of the most amazing sections of Goa, providing breathtaking views of vast expanses of closed canopy treetops and natural bliss. You'll also be able to capture panoramic views of the hills and valleys along the way.

On the way, you will see the habitats of exotic animals, birds and butterflies. And if we're lucky, we might even get to see some amazing wildlife as well!!

The phototrek will be a fine opportunity for the members to practice nature photography and learn a few tricks as well!! At the same time, the fresh air and almost untouched, pristine beauty of the area will definitely inspire the trekkers!!

Results Of August Photography Competition!!

The first photography competition of the Club was based on the theme 'Go Green', and we received an amazing response from the members of the club.

The judging for the competition was done by renowned Goan photographer Mr. Alirio Saldanha, Director of the Stenodac Academy Of Professional Photography And Cinematography. Here are the results :
(click on the images to view them fullsize)

1st Place: Navin Pai - Green, whichever way you choose!!

This picture is my interpretation of the theme, which is GO GREEN. Shown in the foreground are blades of grass, painted green by the August rains, while the background shows the famous windmill in GEC, which is considered one of the greenest, most environment friendly way of generating electricity...Going green can be done in multiple ways, and this pic highlights two of the methods....i.e planting plants, and using renewable sources of energy.

2nd Place: Nikhil Kakodkar - Go Green!

Monsoon is the time of the year when everything in nature comes to life. Its that time when all around Goa we get to see many green fields. I took this snap in one of the fields, and it took me a lot of time to properly focus this droplet of rain water with my cell phone camera.

3rd Place: Sagar Kamat - Have a green heart

In these times of increased ecological crisis, global warming and extinctions, it's important for everybody to think, act and live our lives in a more environmentally friendly way. This is a pic of a leaf of one of the many wild plants that magically blossom during the monsoons. can this be nature's way of reminding us of our responsibilities? is it pleading us to have 'A Green Heart'?

4th Place:Aakash Rodrigues - Parrot

Got kinda lucky with this one.. one morning, i heard a sort of screeching outside, and my mom tells me, "Thats probably a parrot there." I think to myself, "Hey.. parrots are green right?"
hehe. i rush downstairs with my camera, and this is what i got.

5th Place:Aakash Rodrigues -Newborn.

A "newborn" leaf right after a steady drizzle in the morning... Freshness at it's best. :)

6th Place: Noah Silveira -The Dreamer

Gazing towards the horizon, straight at the world outside
Wondering, 'will mother earth will survive?'
Hoping that mankind will stop abusing her, sometime.

I watch the sun go down like everyone of us
Im hoping that the dawn will bring a sign
A better place for those who will come after us this time.

The green we see today will just be a puff of smoke,
or a really good dream to reminisce.
once the Green is gone,
It'll be too late to 'Go Green'.

So I guess I'm just a dreamer, dreaming of better days.

Congratulations to all the winners!! Great going guys!!

P.S : Also check out the other entries submitted for the competition in this earlier blog post.
